SAVE SAN PASCUAL PARK

Save San Pascual Park is a community-driven, grassroots-led group opposed to the Arroyo Seco Water Reuse Project.

THANK YOU to everyone who send Environmental Impact Report Scoping Letters to Pasadena. Your letters will help determine the outcome of this project!

Key Points that must be addressed on the Arroyo Seco Water Reuse Project:

  • There are alternative and natural solutions for that this project which could clean the water and that would lessen the environmental impact.
  • Los Angeles park land cannot be given away forever by Los Angeles Recreation and Parks to complete this project. This is in violation of the Los Angeles Charter.
  • Over 140 mature trees will be cut down to complete this project. This will decimate a natural wildlife habitat and local ecosystem. This will also have a detrimental impact on both local residents as well as visitors to a Los Angeles park.
  • 20 Million gallons of water will be captured annually to water the South Pasadena golf course. This is unacceptable. Additionally, 60% of the total amount of water that is planned to be captured annually (175 Million gallons) will not be returned to the Arroyo Seco.
  • The Indigenous communities, including the Kizh Nation, must be consulted and included in the development of this project.
  • The pollution this project claims to be cleaning from the Arroyo Seco must be eliminated at the source. This should have already been implemented, reviewed and tested and retested for source contamination prior to any plans being created.
  • The South Pasadena section of this park has been in in desperate need of maintenance for years. This begs the question if South Pasadena will be able to maintain a project of this size for years into the future.

Here are a few of the volunteers who have been maintaining the Los Angeles section of San Pascual Park, and who are opposed to the Arroyo Seco Water Reuse Project. THANK YOU to all the volunteers for your efforts so everyone can enjoy this park!

What is at stake? The Ecological Impact.

One of the goals of the “water re-use” project is to divert 20 Million gallons of water from the Arroyo Seco channel annually to the South Pasadena Golf course to the detriment of the ecology, environment, and cultural heritage of Los Angeles.

Indigenous land – Kizh Nation

The importance of the San Pascual neighborhood cannot be overstated. Housing burial grounds, it is sacred land to the local tribes of Kizh Nation. It is our intention to include the local Indigenous tribes to be an active and leading part of this activism. To learn more about the Kizh Nation, please click here to visit their website.

Where is San Pascual Park located?

San Pascual Park is part of the Hahamongna watershed in the San Gabriel Valley. Originating from the Arroyo Seco Headwaters (near NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory), San Pascual Park sits several miles away near the end of the watershed that feeds into the Los Angeles River.

Here are directions to the area where the San Pascual portion of this project is planned.

This map illustrates the larger Wildlife Corridor and the connectedness of the Arroyo Seco from JPL to San Pascual Park to Deb’s Park.

Importance of San Pascual Park

The area we are working to preserve is a small forest with double the average tree coverage for Los Angeles. This wooded area is a complete ecosystem for turtles, birds, insects, fish, and other wildlife.
